Impediments – The Enemy of Momentum

There are many things that slow momentum.  And there’s an even longer list of items that prevent you from even getting started.

If you have a business or a big goal to achieve in life, you are looking for momentum. To create some energy or inertia behind an idea or an initiative.

But that inertia is hampered in a big way by impediments.

What the heck is an impediment?

im·ped·i·ment [im-ped-uh-muhnt]

noun:   obstruction; hindrance; obstacle.

“OK, I get it.  These are items in the bad column that will keep me from achieving my objectives.  But how do I know when they are there.  And what If I can’t see them?”

Maybe some examples would help:

For business:

A low quality manufacturing or shipping partner – deliveries/services are late or damaged and in poor quality.  The crowd comes and is disappointed.

A bad retail location – maybe there’s no parking, poor lighting or you are lacking a big anchor store to draw the crowd.  You’ll be working too hard and spending too much money to create traffic.

A few unmotivated employees – you drive a hundreds of new customers a day to your store.  But if their hosts aren’t helpful and friendly, you will have stopped sales in its stracks.

For life:

A lack of time or focus – You’ve always wanted to start your first company.  A decorating service or consulting company.  But the time is never there.  So you never reach far enough.

Fear – You are afraid. And find yourself running away from what you most would like to accomplish.  And instead of pursuing it, the idea is left on the bottom of your bucket list.

Lack of education or training – You are held back by a few key pieces of knowledge or credibility.  To allow an important initiative to kick-off.  Maybe a career change or new role with your company.

So the question you should be asking yourself is: what’s holding you back? What impediments, if removed, would allow you to move forward and begin creating something valuable?
